Dance Like No One's Watching

In honor of National Dance Day, I'm going to share a poem I wrote about the best ten years of my life.

When out on stage I felt alive.
Turning, leaping, tapping,
For the best I would strive.

Dancing was what I knew
For ten long years.
Unfortunately, I ventured on to something new.

My degree became my new goal.
Dance left my life for evermore.
I lost part of my soul.

Turning, leaping, tapping,
Thinking, reading, writing,
Turning, leaping, tapping.

My regrets in life are few,
My biggest one, hanging up my dancing shoes.

I still can't help time-stepping in the kitchen while waiting for my popcorn to pop, or pirouetting in my room to my favorite song. In one way or another dance will always be a part of my life. Even if it's only through watching shows like So You Think You Can Dance or Dancing With The Stars. But now that I have my degree, it has become my new goal to get back in the dance studio...once I get a full time job that is!

Birthday Wishes

Another year gone by
My oh my
How time flies

It seem like only yesterday I was in kindergarten
Riding my pink tricycle around the cul-de-sac

I blinked

College over
Ready to start my life

Another year gone by
My oh my
How time flies

I Love That Dirty Water

I am a Boston Red Sox fan who lives in New York Yankee territory. I can't go to any local store without seeing a Yankee t-shirt, a pin stripe water bottle, or a box of "Joe" with Joe Girardi's face on it. But last weekend I got a break from the Bronx Bombers in Boston.
I felt at home; like I could wear my Red Sox hat without fear of getting beat up or cursed at. I even got to watch a Sox game on T.V. before I went to see two more live. Oh man did we have great seats!! Fifteen rows back on the first base side for the first game, and the third base side the next afternoon, I could see the players eyes. They've never felt more real to me.
The only downside of the weekend, besides the loss on Sunday, was being sqeezed into the train back to the hotel Saturday night with other sweaty fans. I've heard stories of people literally being pushed into trains in China, but I didn't understand how it could possibly get that bad, until now. It might have been the most uncomfortable I have ever been in my life. Luckily, we drove to the Sunday afternoon game to escape the crowds.
I love Boston. It is the only city I would live in. I love that Dirty Water!!

A Sensitive Subject

You've probably heard of Down Syndrome, Tourette's Syndrome and Stockholm Syndrome, but have you ever heard of Turner's Syndrome?
Named after Dr. Henry Turner, who discovered the syndrome in the 1930's, Turner's Syndrome affects 1 in every 2,500 girls. At birth, these girls are born with part or all of their second sex chromosome missing, causing short stature, reproductive difficulties, as well as other physical characteristics and medical complications.
Those are the facts. This is the reality. Diagnosed at birth, I had multiple surgeries, including heart and kidney surgery, and a feeding tube placed in my stomach all before my first birthday. The feeding tube is long gone and I haven't had a major surgery in sixteen years but thing aren't exactly normal. For about ten years of my life I took growth hormone shots every night to help increase my height as much as possible. Good thing I didn't play M.L.B. Now at 4'11'' I am considered a tall Turner's girl!! After the shots I started taking Estrogen pills, which I will continue for the rest of my life. No hot flashes!! A few years later I added Progesterone to start my cycle. To make sure everything is going well I am followed yearly by an Endocrinologist and a Cardiologist and get blood taken before each visit, my least favorite thing. I am a hard stick.
I am not sharing all of this to evoke sympathy. Other than what I've mentioned above, I've had a normal life. I owe that to my incredibly supportive parents, sibling and extended family. In fact, I was lucky. Because each case is different, most Turner's girls are not diagnosed until they realize they have not gotten their period around the age of sixteen. By then it's too late to start growth hormone treatments. No. I am writing this to bring awareness to the little known disease. And to all the young Turner's girls: there may be times you think you can't have a normal life but don't give up. Still go for your dreams; buy those stylish jeans even if they need tailoring; join the soccer team even if all the other players are a inches taller than you; and don't be afraid to learn to drive, seats can be moved closer to the pedals.
I am stronger because of Turner's Syndrome and I wouldn't trade my life for anything.

more poems

Why I Write
Bored, bored, bored
With nothing to do
So I sit here writing
With my pen and notebook too
Adjectives, nouns, verbs
And maybe a rhyme
All come together
To help pass the time
Will this be a masterpiece?
Probably not
But writing this poem
Sure hit the spot

I Got The Music In Me
Caught in traffic after getting dumped,
This day could not be worse.
I finally make it home,
Ready to let the anger consume me,
To embrace the sadness.
Stumbling through my room,
I find my ipod and bring it to life.
My favorite song echoes through the headphone
For only me to hear.
After verse one, my muscles relax
I tap my feet to the beat of the chorus
And by the second verse,
I'm in full performance mode
Dancing and singing along, forgetting everything
The annoyance, the frustration, the heartache,
Gone.
Finally, the song ends.
But, it plays over and over again in my head
Like a bad commercial plays on T.V.
Except I hum instead of sigh.
